First things first: Find what experience group you're in. Not all Pokémon level up at the same rate. There's a formula that tells you how much EXP you will have when you level up next. Those are found here. Don't freak out about it if it looks like too much to memorize; the thing with Fluctuating and Erratic is just that your formula changes when you hit a certain level. The majority land in Medium Fast, which is a piece of cake to calculate. And, if you have a party member in the same EXP group, you can always just rely on him, level up when he does, and blame him if something goes wrong.
When you level up you'll get 5 EVs to add to whatever stats you want in any order you want, added directly to your base stats (If you forgot, to calculate a stat's mod, the formula is: (Stat/2)-5), rounded down. Don't forget that your new stat mods are also your new Fort, Will and Reflex mods, as well as mods for your ACs.
HP's different. HP gains vary; you'll be rolling a die whose value is one eighth your base HP, rounded to the nearest whole number.
This all carries over when you evolve, too. For HP, figure out the ratio of your new base HP and your old base HP and apply it to your current HP, like so:
(New Base HP/Old Base HP)xOld Current HP = New Current HP. Algebra!!
For the other stats, just add the difference of your new base stats and old ones to your current stats.
You get 3 Level Points when you level up, most of the time. If you hit a level that ends in "5" you get 5. If you hit a level that ends with "0" you get 10. If you're going to spend your level points at level-ups, be quick about it, the show must go on! Or just go ahead and wait to do it between sessions. Whatever! Just be sure to update the other players what moves you've learned and stuff.
